Résumé:The article explores the role of geography/space and human agency (as exercised by women) in the story of Gershom, the firstborn son of Moses and Zipporha in the context of the colonization and civilization of the people of Senegal, West Africa by the French. Topics covered include the marginalization of Senegalese people, the pervasive acts of midwives in Gershom's story and the will to live among the Diola people in Senegal during and after the French occupation.
