This issue is referred to in John 13.10 and 15.3, and also in P.Oxy. 840. It is presupposed here that the circle of Jesus' disciples received John's baptism of repentance either from John the Baptist or from Jesus (John 3.22, 26; 4.1). The Gospel of John thus engages with an ongoing debate within Jewish Christianity about the obligatory nature of ritual washing. 
520 |a Der in Joh 3.25 erwähnte „Streit“ der Jünger von Johannes dem Täufer mit einem Juden „über Reinigung“ bezieht sich auf eine Vorrangstellung der durch die Taufe gewirkten, ethischen Reinheit vor allen von der Tora gebotenen kultischen Reinheitsbädern z.B. vor Betreten des Jerusalemer Tempels. Darauf wird auch in Joh 13.10 und 15.3 bzw. in P.Oxy. 840 angespielt. Vorausgesetzt ist dabei, dass der Kreis von Jesu Jüngern mit der Bußtaufe des Johannes von Johannes dem Täufer oder von Jesus getauft war (Joh 3.22, 26 bzw. 4.1). Das Johannesevangelium nimmt damit im Rahmen einer im Judenchristentum andauernden Debatte um die Verbindlichkeit von Reinigungsbädern Stellung.
