| LOK | |0 938 |l Abstract: René Girard'S analysis of the generative role of violence in human culture and religion has highlighted the importance of the epiphany of the "primitive sacred" and the appearance of myth, ritual, and law to channel violence. This analysis is presented and tested particularly with respect to the role of law in classical Roman society on the accounts of Romulus and Remus. Girard has further claimed in Things Hidden that the biblical revelation has definitively uncovered the truth about the relationship of generative violence and religion. This claim is tested with respect to the Sodom and Gomorrah account (Genesis), the oracles of the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and in II Isaiah and Job. The focus of the New Testament investigation is the gospel of Jesus - the gospel accounts about Jesus and the message of Jesus itself. Girard's analysis is found to have disclosed the deconstructive power of the biblical revelation. He has also shown how the law functions in the Bible's alternative perspective on religion and violence. The concluding section examines two violent societies - Lebanon and the United States - and shows the place of law (in connection with myth and ritual) in overcoming this violence.
