The presence of an explicit sacrificial language is in fact very unusual. When it does appear, it is generally to be found in contexts connected to the pagan cult, and is used in a negative sense, one of rejection. Only in two cases is it adopted fully: in the "Martyrium Polycarpi", and in the "Vita Cypriani". Here an explicit relation between sacrifice and martyrdom emerges; this relationship, however, cannot be read within the usual sacrificial schemes, requiring interpretation by reference to the complex Christian doctrine of sacrifice. It then becomes important to recall Paul's thinking, focusing especially on the idea of the "lagiké latreia", and that of Ignatius of Antioch, above all as far as the relationship between the Eucharist and martyrdom is concerned. | ||
