Summary: | The biblical King Josiah has appeared in general histories of the world since ancient times. This article sketches the use made of Josiah by historians from Josephus’s Josiah as noble ruler in his retelling of Jewish world history to the observation of Jan Assmann that Josiah represents the embodiment of culturally intolerant violence. Not until modern times have world histories in the West been divorced from contemporary biblical studies, though histories of the world were usually written for a general readership. The biblical figure Josiah has consistently been included in representations of the human past in conformity to concerns of the age in which the history was written and adapted to the views on humanity of the authors. This receptionhistory surveys the use of Josiah in world histories through two millennia. It provides a concise introduction to the history ofJosiah within a wider context than strictly a history of Biblestudies. |
