| Summary: | At the beginning of the 20th century, Friedrich Delitzsch postulated in several public lectures that the study of cuneiform texts would marginalize the importance of the Old Testament because it could be traced back to Babylonian precursors. The ensuing ‘Babel-Bible Controversy’ has been dealt with extensively, but some aspects, e.g. the reactions of German Jewry, remain to be scrutinized more closely. In this context, Delitzsch’s anti-Semitic publications, beginning in the 1920s, will also be considered. |
