Summary: | The author makes a systematic rereading of Barnabas' Letter through the category of diathḗkē, to be translated not with "covenant", as the majority of scholars do, but with "testament", arriving at the conclusion that this approach is the one that best allows to understand that not easy text. This is not a stretch, because, if one thing is certain, it is that the author of the letter, speaking of diathḗkē, meant "disposition", "testament" and certainly not "covenant". The category of "testament" emphasizes more on the one hand God's initiative, his promise, and on the other hand the man's failure to respond - whether he is Jewish or Gentile - and the need for a Son who is truly the heir of the will of the Father, making it effective with his voluntary death.
