It is the Questiones ad Thalassium. Thalassios, a Libyan higoumen, asks three questions (see Annex) on this book. He makes a confusion between First Esdras and Second Esdras. This proves how little he cares about this text and his alleged author Esdras. He is even in doubts about its inspiration by the Holy Spirit. Maximus does not correct this mistake in his commentary. For him, the main character Zerubbabel is both the figure of Jesus Christ and a master of wisdom, a philosopher hero. So Maximus and Thalassios are witnesses of a reading where Zerubbabel outshines Esdras (at the same time character and alleged author). This is the first step in direction of the late reception of the text, for instance in the Georgian tradition in the Oshki Bible (10th century) where the book is named Esdras-Zerubbabel. | ||

Ces deux lectures par Maxime et Thalassios montrent comment le personnage de Zorobabel se substitue à Esdras, personnage et auteur supposé du livre, et annoncent le nouveau titre qui sera donné au texte d’Esdras Zorobabel dans la tradition géorgienne de la Bible dite d’Oshki (xe siècle). | ||
