Description
Summary:This is a book that needed to be written, one that gives a balanced and judicious airing to two questions: what are the values upheld by the Bible and how can we relate to them? It engages in contemporary dialogue, especially from within the present-day American context, engaging with modern issues around feminism, environmental ethics, and liberation theology to name but a few. Collins shows how misguided the claim to thinking one knows what is a biblical value can be. He uncovers what the priorities are for each Testament, successfully showing up their different emphases and concerns. He stresses the diversity of opinion found throughout the Bible, which makes citing one text over another difficult. He also shows how often people misrepresent what is actually there. With his deep engagement with biblical studies, Collins is well-placed to uncover what texts are actually saying (or not saying), despite the contingencies of the differing contexts of their interpreters.
