Summary: | The Letter to the Hebrews has been and remains a hugely important text in the history of the church’s thought about the nature of the atonement, certainly in the early centuries and in the Reformation, but also throughout the past two millennia. This collected volume addresses atonement, here construed in a broad sense, in relation to Hebrews from a number of angles. These sixteen essays emerge from a series of sessions at the Evangelical Theological Society’s annual meetings in North America between 2014 and 2017. They are written by a variety of scholars who represent a greater diversity both ecumenically and, in terms of approach and expertise, beyond biblical criticism. The book is a ‘dialogue’ in its origins more than in its structure: papers were presented and discussed over a number of years, and were also circulated among contributors, enabling feedback to be given and received. After summarizing the essays I will highlight two key areas of contention that can be discerned in the collection. |
