Summary: | The following article deals with the results of four excavation seasons (March 2000, March 2001, March-April 2002, and November 2005) in the area of the Episcopal town Pharan (Arabic ‘Firan’) in South Sinai. They refer, as main subjects, to the fourth-century church on the summit of the hill opposite the town, where according to the legend Moses once stood supervising the battle against the Amelekites (Exod. 17.12), and secondly to the church on the acropolis of the town. Further subjects are the presumable house of the bishop at the western slope of the acropolis hill, the discovery of a fish-pond in the valley and the excavation of some private houses in the town. |
