| Summary: | The fourth revision of the Luther Bible in 2017 pursued two objectives. The principal objective was to produce a translation more faithful to the original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek text than that of Luther's translation or its previous revisions of 1892 and 1984. Pursing this objective led to the surprising result that, in a third of the revisions, Luther's original translation was reinstated over later revisions. The remaining two thirds of the changes reflected new findings in textual criticism. Major revisions were made to the translation of the Apocrypha as well as in many cases in the New Testament. Fewer changes were made to the Old Testament translation. The second objective was to retain the literary quality of the Luther Bible, which continues to be the most frequently used German translation. This revision no longer claims exclusive authority for all German Protestant Bible readers. Its particular profile becomes visible in comparison with numerous other translations. |
