| Summary: | The Alliance Israélite Universelle made a very important contribution to the educational advancement of Persian Jewry, and defended its civil rights. Such was not the case in the Zionist domain. The representatives of The Alliance founded schools in Persia at the end of the last century. They found communities imbued with the spirit of messianic Zionism, but without knowledge of political Zionism. They used a non-Zionist approach, but there was no one in the communities to demand a different policy. Later, the pro-Zionist atmosphere that existed for several years in Persia, following the Balfour Declaration, the AIU representatives partially adapted themselves to the times. However, with the decline of the Zionist movement in Persia they returned to their former attitude. Zionist feelings intensified within Persian Jewry with the Allied conquest of Persia. AIU representatives went along with the trend. Their contribution to the Zionist movement in Persia should be remembered in history of this movement; but unfortunately, this contribution was weak and short-lived. In 1948, the AIU school principals were tempted by the economic advantages offered to their schools by the anti-Zionist representative of "Otzar Hatora" in Persia, and they handed over to him the responsibility for Jewish studies in their institutions. With this ended the hope for the Zionisation of the AIU schools in Iran. |
