Summary: | When read closely, biblical references in four new literary works published in 2021 reveal the diverse use of biblical motifs, narratives, and subject matter, as well as various ways that these works point to the literary reception and rewriting of the Bible within different styles and genres. If one takes into account the different contexts of the works and the different biographies of the authors, the multifaceted engagement with the Bible found in these works can be classified in terms of worldview and religion, and denominational influences can also be discerned, alongside characteristics specific to the authors themselves. Whether it is faithfulness to or a critical relationship with the Bible, agreement with or deviation from the biblical text, or alienation and creative redesign, the Bible proves to be an extremely productive literary source right up to the present, both in terms of its language and its content. Its archetypal-universal stories serve as an important starting point for the interpretation of self, life, and time, and even as a critical mirror for the basic ambivalence and polarity of human existence; through manifold literary adaptations and transformations, the biblical texts experience a contemporary, pointed re-presentation. |
