Description
Summary:This paper provides a revised paleographic and linguistic analysis of Sinai 349, an early alphabetic inscription from Serabit el-Khadem in the Sinai Peninsula. Based on this analysis, I argue that Sinai 349 is a commemorative inscription celebrating the promotion of an individual named Māṯ from miner to chief of miners. As part of his inscription, Māṯ mentions that he prepared offerings on behalf of "the brother of the ruler," a Semitic official who also appears in Egyptian inscriptions from Serabit el-Khadem dating to the reign of Amenemhat III ( 1831-1786 B.C.E. ). The reference to this individual constitutes the first internal evidence for dating the early alphabetic inscriptions from Serabit el-Khadem and suggests that Sinai 349 dates between 1827 and 1818 B.C.E.
