| Summary: | In contrast to the formal history presented in the MT concerning the death of Saul in the war with the Philistines, the present article puts to the test the working hypothesis that David was somehow involved in the death of the King. This hypothesis is occasioned first by some overall patterns running through all of the History of David's Rise to power (HDR), which have already given rise to suspicions among scholars as to David's complicity in the death of several key figures along his struggle to the throne; and second, by several hints in the available reports of Saul's death, especially the intrusive word םשא in 1 Sam 31, 3. It is suggested that this word hints at David's men, a groupe of fifth column long established within Saul's court. On the basis of such vv., as 1 Chr 12, 1-2.17-19.30, it is also suggested that David's fifth column consisted of Saul's close relatives and tribemates who are known to have been, according to the biblical tradition, experts in bows and throw armory. |
