Drawing on both biblical and extrabiblical evidence, this article argues that the conflict in the story is more plausibly understood as one between divine command and covenantal promise. Despite not being about theological ethics in the usual sense, this interpretation may still have Jewish meaning if we situate it in the realm of theodicy.
