Description
Summary:In this article, I seek to show how Cyril of Alexandria's exposition of the effects of eucharistic participation provide us with a hitherto overlooked component of his overall vision of theosis, which may deepen our understanding of theosis in the Christian tradition more broadly. Based on his understanding of what the Eucharist is, he develops the idea that eucharistic participation creates a fleshly union amongst participants, causing the church as a body to reflect more perfectly the unity of the Trinity. The somatic union of the faithful can thus be seen as an aspect of theosis, but one which has not been adequately addressed by recent studies on theosis.
