| Summary: | This article focuses on selected works of contemporary literature that deal with the theme of ?hell? and asks about their perspectives and motives. As an introduction, some remarks are made on literary visions of hell in the Christian tradition. After that, three literary works are presented: 1) Marschroute eines Lebens and Gratwanderung (1967) by Yevgenia Ginsburg. In these books she describes her years as a politically persecuted woman in the camps of the Soviet Union under Stalin. 2) Die Vertreibung aus der Hölle (2001) by Robert Menasse. He narrates the lifes of two men and their families who faced persecution at different times, thus also raising the question of escaping one?s own and collective history. 3) The Apology (2019) by Eve Ensler, who has been abused by her father as a child. In this book, the father is in a kind of ?limbo?, facing his deeds and facing hell, and speaking out the apology that Eve Ensler never received throughout her life. The article concludes with a synopsis of these three literary works with a view to theological thinking, and the subject/motifs of ?hell?. Thus, contemporary literature does not create new visions of hell, but the experiences of hell bring the victims into focus, they raise the question of whether retribution and forgiveness may be possible, and what responsibility means in facing contemporary hells. |
