This article endeavours to show that the Joseph story belongs to the literary type "noveletteli". With Von Rad it can also be shown that the basic pattern in terms of which the Story functions is represented by the old chokma. The wisdom teacher who created the novelette drew on ancient traditions when he wrote the story as we know it today. On the other hand, the story fits well into its present context as part of the "salvation history" for the very reason that the origin of its material lies in these ancient traditions.
