Nous cherchons à reconstituer les différents aspects de l’ancien naziréat, un phénomène répandu dans la société biblique primitive. Plus nous disposerons d’informations, plus nous serons en mesure d’identifier les disparités entre ce phénomène et les principes inscrits dans la loi et de comprendre l’agenda législatif qui l’alimente. Afin de retracer et de reconstruire l’ancien naziréat, nous examinons la personnalité et les modèles de comportement de Samson et d’autres personnages qui présentent des affinités étroites avec le naziréat ‒ Samuel, les Rékabites et le groupe mentionné en Amos 2. Notre enquête révèle qu’ils partageaient tous un ensemble de caractéristiques «douces» qui faisaient d’eux, pour leur entourage, un modèle de loyauté, de conformité et de proximité avec Dieu. Les prêtres désapprouvaient clairement cela, se considérant eux-mêmes comme ayant été mis à part dans ce but. La façon dont le législateur sacerdotal aborde ce défi indique que, plutôt que de chercher à extirper le naziréat, il le redéfinit comme un vœu régi par un ensemble de règles strictes qui peuvent être observées par n’importe qui, en mettant de côté le type de personnalité qui les caractérisait habituellement. De cette façon, il l’a effectivement vidé de son contenu, éliminant ainsi la menace qu’il représentait pour la classe sacerdotale. | ||
| 520 | |a This article examines the motives that lie behind the Priestly legislator’s stipulation that any Israelite could become a Nazirite, thereby achieving holiness. We seek to reconstruct the various aspects of earlier Naziriteship, a widespread phenomenon in early biblical society. The more information at our disposal, the better we shall be able to identify the disparities between it and the principles enshrined in the law and understand the legislative agenda fueling it. In order to trace and reconstruct the earlier Naziriteship, we scrutinize the personality and behavioral patterns of Samson and other figures who exhibit close affinities with Naziriteship – Samuel, the Rechabites, and the group referred to in Amos 2. Our survey reveals that they all shared a set of 'soft' features which made them a model for those around them of loyalty, compliance and closeness to God. The priests clearly disapproved of this, regarding themselves as being set apart for that purpose. The ways in which the Priestly legislator addresses this challenge indicate that rather than seeking to extirpate Naziriteship, he redefined it as a vow governed by a set of strict rules that could be observed by anyone, sidelining the personality type that customarily characterized them. In this way, he effectively voided it of content, thereby removing the threat it posed to the Priestly class. | ||
