Description
Summary:This essay analyses Erasmus of Rotterdam’s two treatises on marriage, the "Encomium matrimonii and the Institutio Christiani matrimonii", and more briefly, their fortunes. These are two very innovative texts in terms of the conjugal bond and woman, which became disruptive in the historical context marked by the rise of the Protestant Reformation. Marriage was considered by Erasmus to be a sacred and natural bond, superior to ecclesiastical celibacy, the abolition of which was proposed, and central to individuals, the State and the new Christian society. Given its significance, the humanist legitimised divorce in the case of unsuccessful unions. The valorisation of marriage also entailed the definition of a less traditional view of women.
