| Sumario: | This article treats the use of Jewish Scriptures by New Testament authors with respect to one particular aspect, that is, the use of humour. It contributes to the study of humour in antiquity, casting in relief what some ancient authors offer to their audiences: occasional laughter. There are echoes of Jewish literature in the New Testament that, according to the argument developed here, contribute to its humoristic traits. While assessing the success of attempts at humour is beyond the scope of this article, the author here proposes that certain plays on words from Jewish sources—evident also in patterns identifiable in the New Testament texts—evoke laughter. It is in this way that the literary culture of the New Testament is marked by a certain penchant for humour. |
