The present study first draws attention to the fact that Isaiah 34 is linked to Isaiah 1-33 by means of very specific semantic references. Second, the function of the chapter's lament character is investigated, in connection with the old problem of the relationship between Edom and the nations in the judgement announced here. The lament elements present the judgement in as far as it has been determined for the nations, but has for the moment only been realised on Edom. In this way the chapter forms a redactional bridge between the first and the second part of the book of Isaiah. Proto-Isaiah announces the judgement on the nations, while in Deutero-Isaiah they are given the chance of recognising the God of Israel.
