| 520 | |a This article deals with the historical approach to the Old Testament. Old Testament science is a historical enterprise which can at least be dated back to the inaugural lecture of Gabler. This article briefly highlights Gabler's views and accentuates the flowering of historical scholarship during the nineteenth century. The impact of the previous century on Old Testament scholarship was immense and it gave rise to all kinds of dichotomies (,what it meant'-'what it means'; descriptionptive-normative; 'Religionsgeschichte'-theology). It is argued that a historical understanding of the Old Testament is still valid but then we must talk differently about our historical endeavours. It is emphasised that historical study must be a free, open and creative enterprise. | ||
