520 |a The use of proverbs is often prompted by a conflict situation or problematic circumstances. Proverbs can serve a variety of functions in such conflict situations. Proverbs can be used to inflame or defuse conflicts. In addition, proverbs can also be used to introduce completely new frameworks, resulting in the conflict becoming redundant. This study focuses on this reframing function of proverbs. A discussion of the dynamics of problem formation and problem resolution provides the background for a brief overview of various functional properties of proverbs. Material is then presented to illustrate the above principles: the first example is taken from a biblical text, namely 1 Samuel 24:14, where David uses a proverb to defuse the conflict between him and king Saul; the other describes how a proverb is used in a conflict resolution process in the Angolan Fiote community.
