Riepilogo:Homosexuality - perspectives from the ancient Near East Homosexuality is certainly one of the most burning moral issues of our time. Currently it remains a vehemently debated theme in Afrikaans Reformed Churches. This article has the intention to portray a few perspectives on same-sex relationships from the ancient Near East. Examples from Egypt, the Hittites, Mesopotamia and Ugarit will be portrayed. In view of this culturalhistorical background new questions may be raised about biblical texts (e g Gn 19; Jdg 19; Lv 18 and 20), which are often used in the homosexual debate in church circles. The use and function of these texts to denounce or to legitimize certain viewpoints in the homosexual debate should therefore be questioned.
