| Summary: | This article aims to survey and evaluate the impact of reception theory on the practice of Old Testament study in South Africa. Three issues seem to have dominated research: the respective roles of text and reader in interpretation, the historical context of both text and reader, and the impact of the sociopolitical context of the reader on interpretation. Although reception theory has not had a major impact on Old Testament study in South Africa, it has made important contributions to the hermeneutical debate. The matters of the nature and substance of the biblical canon and of the ethical responsibility of commentators interpreting the biblical text within a specific sociopoltical context, especially, presently require serious attention. |
