Description
Summary:Augustine presents the Church as "happy" because it can see the conversion of peoples, and it will see the definitive affirmation in the last times. The happiness of the present time is restless: after the era of martyrs, the ignorance of this world remains deep. The sacred texts have predicted a complete happiness, the believer cannot enjoy it with the same fullness of angels. The efforts required do not diminish the full satisfaction that is prepared for the believer. There are many signs of the approaching future happiness, even though the conduct of Christians is in many ways contradictory to this horizon. In the final times, God keeps His promise to those who listen to Him: the certainty of the happiness to come must prevail over the reasons for present mourning, and it must therefore be entrusted to the sovereign will of God. The happiness of the eschatological condition, when every shadow of uncertainty will be removed, will present a decisive reversal compared to the present. The relationship between the two images of the Church, present and future, is so connected to the happiness of the individual and the community of believers.
