Summary: | The following article discusses Jewish Aramaic translations of the typical Biblical Hebrew constructions בְּ / כְּ + construct infinitive, which are usually translated with temporal clauses in English. In the Aramaic translations a variety of possible translations is attested. This study uncovers some of the principles which guided the translator(s) of Targum Onqelos in their choices. The discussion will be narrowed down to the representative examples of Genesis, since the evidence in Exod.–Deut. largely agrees with that found in Genesis. Finally, I will briefly refer to Targum Jonathan and the Palestinian Targumim. |
