Sumario:In modern Jesus research the Gospel of John is under fire because of its »high« Christology which is present in the discourses of Jesus. Indeed, the difference to the Synoptic tradition is obvious. However, the Johannine tradition is an alternative Jesus story which did not wish to replace the Synoptic Gospel but to open the eyes for new aspects of Jesus’ mission and to deepen the faith. This Johannine perspective stimulates historical-critical exegesis to question its own ideological presupposition and to transform its method into a hermeneutic of memory which reconstructs the essential relation between faith and reason in order to look at Jesus not only in the mirror of the Synoptic Gospels but in the light of the Johannine tradition recalling and developing its memory of the historical Jesus as well.
