Summary: | This essay examines the Christological understanding of truth in the New Testament. A brief introduction sets out a general understanding of the New Testament's conception of ,truth as reality'. The relationship between the Temple cult and the soteriological mission of Jesus Christ in Hebrews then specifies this notion of truth as a Christological one, which is explored more fully through an exegesis of ,truth' in the Gospel of John. In the fourth Gospel, where the nature of truth is an overriding theme, Christ is shown not simply to announce a truth but to be the truth, requiring a personal/relational understanding of reality. Finally, the ,contours' of the New Testament understanding of truth are considered theologically. The understanding of truth offered here culminates in a doxological summons: to speak the truth is to praise Christ who is ,the truth'. |
