Summary: | This paper outlines the History of Christian Pilgrimage from Old Testament to modern times. It argues that the idea of pilgrimage is rooted in ancient Jewish festivals, and is to be found in the New Testament also. It argues that in sub-Apostolic times the graves of Christian martyrs were venerated and this continued and grew through the Middle Ages up until the Reformation. Shrines, and therefore pilgrimages to them, were largely suppressed at the Reformation but were revived in the nineteenth century. This revival is explored and the place of pilgrimage as a contemporary Christian practice is examined. |
