Summary: | Fifteen fragmentary Greek inscriptions have been found at different periods of time in the area of the monastery of the Franciscan Order on Mount Tabor. Inscription No. 1 is of a pagan nature and attributed to the Hellenistic period; while most of the others, dated to the early Byzantine period, are of a typical Christian character. The latter are engraved on (now broken) marble chancel screens and slabs, and one on a rectangular block tombstone of rough limestone. Together they attest to the religious/cultural transformations that Mount Tabor had undergone over the generations. |
