Summary: | The wooden portal of the church of St. Catherine monastery in Sinai, dated to the reign of Justinian I (527-565 CE), leading from the outer space, the narthex, to its inner one, the nave, consists of two wings, each with two parts. They are arranged symmetrically in seven vertical rows of alternately square and rectangular sunken panels. The article under discussion is an attempt, based on the writings of the Early Church Fathers, to present an iconographical examination and symbolic and/or allegorical interpretation of the motifs carved on this main wooden portal. |
