Summary: | This study seeks to illuminate the literary and theological nuances of Luther's use of ludens Deus as shown in his exposition of the stories of the patriarchs. In his use of the theme ludens Deus (the playing God) or ludus divinus (the divine game), Luther drives the theme home for his students with various rhetoric dynamics and theological nuances in four different stories of the patriarchs. A close look at these texts can gain a richer appreciation of Luther's use of such language, his interpretation of these biblical narratives, and his understanding of God's work in believers. |
