J.-C.), durant lequel la documentation écrite est pratiquement absente des régions de Syrie centrale et occidentale. Au xviiie s. av. J.-C., les archives de Mari sont donc quasiment les seules à procurer, pour quelques dizaines d’années, des informations sur les régions situées entre Euphrate et Méditerranée, avec lesquelles le royaume de Mari a entretenu des relations à l’époque de ses derniers souverains. Il est question dans cette communication de la place importante occupée par les capitales rivales qu’étaient alors Alep et Qaṭna, du statut qui était à cette époque celui de la vallée de l’Oronte et du rôle joué par les ports maritimes de Byblos et d’Ugarit. Sont rapidement analysés de façon synthétique quatre dossiers évoquant les relations de Mari avec « l’Ouest ». Et sont retracées pour finir les routes empruntées entre Euphrate et Méditerranée, qui amenaient finalement au franchissement de l’Oronte afin d’atteindre la mer. | ||
| 520 | |a Nearly an entire millennium separates the archives of Ebla from those of El Amarna (ca 2400-1400 bce), a period in which written sources from the central and western regions of Syria are almost non-existent. It is only in the last decades of the 18th cent. bce that the archives from Mari provide any information concerning the regions between the Euphrates Valley and the Mediterranean Sea. It is during this period that the later kings of the Mari kingdom maintained close relations with this region and its kingdoms. This paper highlights the important role played by the two rival kingdoms of Aleppo and Qatna, the status of the Orontes Valley, and the role played by the maritime cities of Ugarit and Byblos. Also provided are a synthesis and survey of four dossiers from Mari that reveal its relations with the West and the establishment of the major routes that allowed the crossing of the Orontes river to reach the Mediterranean sea. | ||
