| Summary: | Freemasonry is a collective term for a quite differentiated landscape of associations that are committed to the values of humanitarianism, Christianity or Enlightenment based on the tradition of the 1717 English lodges and their "Constitutions". In general, they claim to be institutions of morality offering each single member the opportunity to pursue a path of ethically accountable self-education embedded in an initiation rite and a world of undogmatic symbolism. Instead of taking a simple chain or a ring as a symbol - one that could easily have been derived from tools of the trade - the Temple of Solomon became their all-embracing image. However, the act of building the Temple was no longer read as part of ecclesiastical or state organisation, but rather as the intrinsic feature of civil society. In that context, the "Old Testament" is used to deliver the keywords for a narrative on the construction of Solomon’s Temple. The reception of this visual imagery corresponds to Christian interpretation of the "Old Testament". |
