Item Description: | The first New Testament in Xhosa According to Appleyard the various portions were prepared as follows: St. Matthew to St. Luke, Acts, Romans, Philippians to II Thessalonians, Titus and Philemon by Henry H. Dugmore (Wesleyan Missionary Society); St. John and I and II Timothy by William J. Davis (Wesleyan Missionary Society); I and II Corinthians by C.W. Posselt (Berlin Missionary Society); Galatians, Ephesians and Hebrews by Jakob L. Döhne (Berlin Missionary Society); James to Revelation by Joseph C. Warner (Wesleyan Missionary Society). The Acts and Romans marked 'a return to the uniting system of orthography, with two or three alterations as agreed upon at a Meeting of Missionaries held at Umxelo in 1845' The portions were printed at Fort Peddie and Newton Dale and the printing was begun in 1842 and completed in February 1846. 'During the progress of the printing of this edition a certain number of larger books were struck off for immediate sale' (see the 1842 edition of Matthew, the 1842 edition of Mark, the 1845 edition of Luke and the 1845 edition of Acts). The signatures indicate that the book was printed in sections. |
