| Summary: | In 2 Thessalonians 1-2, to assure the persecuted Christians anxious about the Day of the Lord, Paul presents a brief scenario of the future revelation of 'the man of lawlessness' and the parousia of the Lord Jesus Christ (2,1-8). And in the surrounding passages (1,5-12 and 2,9-17) he repeats the message that in his 'just judgment' God will deliver a verdict of salvation for them, the believers of the gospel, while meting out condemnation for their unbelieving persecutors. In doing this, he echoes many words and themes of Romans 1-2, including 1,16-17. This new observation of Paul’s justification doctrine in 2 Thessalonians has some significant implications for understanding Pauline soteriology, in general, and the message of 2 Thessalonians, in particular. |
