Summary: | Since the days of Christian Herrmann Weisse’s Die evangelische Geschichte kritisch und philosophisch bearbeitet (1838), the so-called 'doublets' have been a classical topic within the study of the synoptic gospels. In particular the far greater number of doublets in Matthew and Luke when compared to Mark was frequently used as an important or even decisive argument in favor of the existence of the sayings source Q. Focusing on doublets in the Gospel of Luke, this study provides a critical overview on the history of research, proposes a more consistent terminology and conceptualizes doublets as a literary phenomenon which can be studied independently of a particular hypothesis regarding the synoptic problem. As an addendum, the study contains a synopsis of the most important lists of Lukan doublets which continues the systematizing attempt of Geert Van Oyen (1997). |
