Description
Summary:Franz Werfel’s „Höret die Stimme“ (engl. „Hearken Unto the Voice“) is the masterpiece of a biblical novel. Its main source is the Book of Jeremiah. The extent to which Werfel draws on this and several other biblical writings is extraordinary, as is the idea of rearranging it in chronological order, expanding the portrayal of the main characters and foregrounding the main conflict, namely listening to the divine voice. The figure of the prophet Jeremiah appears as an example of someone who is completely dedicated to the search for God’s words, constantly coming into opposition with the people around him and suffering immensely as a result. Werfel’s novel demonstrates an extraordinary sensitivity to its sources and to the unique character of the Bible, and he manages to combine them in a creative and fascinating way to create a message for a modern audience. This article analyses the connections between the novel and the biblical book of Jeremiah and the techniques Werfel uses.
