| Summary: | The aim of this work is to describe the Christian assembly, in particular in the light of the classification of Christian congregations as associational, a view of Christian groups which, while essayed in the nineteenth century by Heinrici and Hatch (neither of whom appears in the bibliography), has recently gained ground. As such it is an enormously ambitious project, as chapters concern the origin of weekly gathering, the development of gatherings in the morning, the eucharist, the reading of Scripture, preaching, singing and prayer, and finally ‘other ritual actions’, under which heading the ritual kiss, ordination, footwashing, anointing, almsgiving, healing, exorcism, and doxology are all included. |
