Summary: | This new Aramaic inscription is one of many short memorial inscriptions found in Hatra in northern Iraq. The inscription is rather poorly inscribed on a limestone block and there is severe damage along its left side. The full dimensions of the original limestone block are unknown. The inscription is characterized by the short formula of commemoration, dkyr, ‘remembered be’. This formula is quite common in the early Syriac inscriptions as well as in Nabataean, Palmyrene and Jewish Aramaic inscriptions. The inscription also shows the well-known features of the Aramaic of Hatra with regard to script, language and content. |
