Summary: | The so-called "J Compilation" (CCSA 14) is a composite text. Different compilators contributed successively to the creation of a Latin infancy gospel, which reached its fullest extension in the Arundel form. This article analyses selected passages from the Arundel Compilation in order to illustrate the various methods used by these compilators. The naming of Mary (§16), the election of Joseph (§28), and the story of the compassionate robber (§111-125) all reveal traces of original compositional activity, which give the text the appearance of narrative unity. |
