Summary: | Ælfric's remarks about Anne and Joachim provide an opportunity to assess not only the spread of apocryphal traditions about them around the beginning of the eleventh century but also Ælfric's attitude toward this material. In keeping with his stance on similar works, Ælfric, unlike his contemporary Hrotsvit of Gandersheim, condemned stories derived from the Protevangelium of James. Yet one of his remarks draws attention to his use of another tradition, the Trinubium Annae, that he did accept. These contrasting decisions establish historical truth as the criterion for Ælfric's judgments in this matters. |
