Le tableau de Greuze ou des gravures anciennes nous aident à visualiser la scène. Cette image est pourtant rare dans les familles réformées du XVIe siècle et appartient davantage à l’imaginaire des sociétés bibliques du XIXe. Ce n’est qu’au XVIIe siècle, et tard dans le XVIIe siècle, que les autorités ecclésiastiques calvinistes, à Genève, privilégièrent vraiment la lecture familiale des Écritures. L’article aborde la place de la lecture laïque de la Bible, individuelle ou familiale, à Genève aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, en partant de prises de position de Calvin et de Bèze, puis en observant la pratique de lecteurs laïcs grâce aux registres du Consistoire genevois. D’une certaine manière, c’est l’archéologie du libre examen de l’Écriture par le fidèle réformé que Max Engammare fouille. The image dominating the collective memory of the Reformed world is that of a family, gathered at nightfall around the dining table, listening to the patriarch who reads the Bible in a large format edition open before him. This scene has been engraved in our imagination by Greuze’s famous “Family Worship” painting and by old engravings. However, this was actually a rare scene in Reformed families of the sixteenth century and belongs rather to the imagination of nineteenth-century biblical societies. It was only in the seventeenth century, and even late in that century, that the Calvinist ecclesiastical authorities in Geneva really promoted the reading of Scripture in the family context. This article discusses the place of lay Bible reading, whether individual or family, in Geneva in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, starting with the positions taken by Calvin and Beza, and then noting the practice of lay readers at the hand of the registers of the Genevan Consistory. In a certain sense, it explores an archaeology of the free examination of Scripture by the Reformed. Dieses Bild gehört zum kollektiven Gedächtnis der reformierten Welt : Mit Anbruch der Nacht versammelt sich eine Familie rund um den Eßtisch und hängt an den Lippen des Familienvaters, der aus der vor ihm geöffneten großformatigen Bibel vorliest. Das Bild von Greuze oder alte Stiche visualisieren für uns die Szene. Das Bild ist jedoch sehr selten in den reformierten Familien des 16. Jahrhunderts und gehört umso mehr in die Vorstellungswelt der Bibelgesellschaften des 19. Jahrhundert. Erst im späten 17. Jahrhundert haben die calvinistichen Kirchenleitungen in Genf die Schriftlektüre im Familienkreis stark gemacht. Der Artikel befasst sich mit der Stellung der Bibellektüre durch Nicht-Theologen, einzeln oder im Familienkreis in Genf im 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, ausgehend von den Stellungnahmen von Calvin und Beza, sodann in der Praxis der Lektoren, wie sie in den Genfer Kirchenbüchern zu beobachten ist. In gewisser Weise führt Max Engammare eine Archäologie der freien Untersuchung der Schrift durch die reformierten Gemeindeglieder durch. |
