Description
Summary:Perhaps before there is any further discussion of the possibility or reality of a North Israelite dialect in the Hebrew Bible, interested parties should review the methodologies that determine the conclusions on the subject. Methodological criticisms so far contribute only the usual fragmented and spasmodic attention to the unsettled, and possibly unsettleable question of North Israelite in biblical Hebrew. Presently, our first intent then is to raise some questions in order to help clarify where we can legitimately stand methodologically. Second, if methodologies are perhaps inadequate, then there may be an anomalous collection of lexical and grammatical traits that continues to intrigue linguists as to their source, but there is little consensus; it may be that the source has been inaccurately identified and it is time to suggest another., In that spirit of criticism, we propose not only that writing a North Israelite grammar is misdirected and sorely premature, but that those properties of a supposed North Israelite dialect are quite possibly explained alternatively as colloquialisms that surface throughout the Hebrew Bible.
