| Summary: | After briefly indicating the referential and discourse-rhetorical functions of apposition between a personal name (PN) and a "class noun" (CN) in biblical Hebrew, the article singles out, for detailed discussion, a particular set of instances defined as the x-CN x-PN string: that is, intances where the CN unit precedes the PN unit and the same grammatical operator "x" is repeated, against the norm, with each relevant component. By applying principles of discourse analysis to a number of examples within their respective biblical contexts, in particular comparing instances of the string with other relevant appositional and non-appositional forms of reference in their contexts, the article establishes that, in addition to the headlining of the CN, the repetition of the grammatical operator in the string is also a form of rhetorical marking hitherto virtually unrecognized in scholarly discussion. |
