Summary: | Seven mosaics, in six churches of Jordan, can be dated to the Omeyyad period whether they have been created or restored. Several of them (at Umm-al Rasas, Ma'in) have been transformed so as to hide all animated figures, as it already happened to more ancient ones (Massuh, Madaba). In any case, plants or geometrical patterns, already found in the church have been used and this work has undoubtedly been done by Christian mosaic artists. The destruction of the images in these churches may be explained by the fact that the Muslims came sometimes to pray. All that is left therefore, are the animated figures situated in the part of the sanctuary which is reserved for priests. |
